Thursday, 6 March 2025 The Supreme Court collegium recommended Justice Joymalya Bagchi of Calcutta HC for appointment to the SC, filling one of the two vacancies. If approved, he will join Justice Dipankar Datta from Calcutta HC. The collegium also recommended Justice Harish Tandon as Orissa HCChief Justice. Justice Bagchi previously handled significant cases and argued against the ban on Taslima Nasreen's book.
Murshidabad in West Bengal witnessed violent clashes on April 14, 2025, resulting in three deaths linked to protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025.
