UK announces biggest defence spend plans since Cold War
The prime minister says he will make the UK a “battle-ready nation”, whilst Defence Secretary John Healey has pledged to “create a British Army that is 10 times more lethal”, as the Strategic Defence Review is published.
The government aims to spend 3% of GDP on defence by 2034, although the Treasury has not yet guaranteed to fund it, and some of the UK’s Nato allies say it is not enough.

China has lashed out at U.S. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth following his remarks at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, where he warned that China could imminently use military force against Taiwan. Beijing condemned the speech as provocative and divisive, accusing Hegseth of inciting bloc confrontation and pushing a Cold War mentality. China's foreign ministry dismissed the U.S. accusations as defamatory and asserted that only Washington deserved the label of a hegemonic power. The fiery exchange underscores growing regional tensions over Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific power balance.

Ukraine’s NATO membership hopes face a major setback as the alliance drops any mention of its bid from the upcoming Hague Summit’s final declaration. To avoid divisions, NATO will remain silent on Kyiv’s accession, with U.S. reluctance and Trump’s return to prominence deepening the rift. While Zelensky may attend a royal dinner, he’s excluded from formal talks. As NATO downplays Ukraine ties, Washington withdraws leadership, raising fears of a soft pivot toward Moscow amid stalled peace talks and rising global tensions.

Russia has used its hypersonic Oreshnik missile for the first time in an attack on Dnipro, Ukraine, striking at unmatched speeds of Mach 10–11. Surveillance footage showed six massive fireballs, and intelligence confirms the missile carried multiple warheads. President Putin touted its capabilities on state TV, warning NATO that the missile can bypass all current defenses and deliver devastation comparable to a nuclear strike—even with conventional payloads. The Pentagon has labeled it experimental, but its battlefield debut is sending shockwaves through Europe and the global defense community.
