In a historic and high-stakes election, centrist and pro-EU candidate Nicușor Dan has defeated ultranationalist rival George Simion to become the next President of Romania. With 100% of votes counted, Dan secured nearly 54% of the vote, reversing Simion’s first-round lead and delivering a major blow to Trump-style nationalism in Eastern Europe.

France has denied allegations of interfering in Romania’s presidential elections after Telegram founder Pavel Durov claimed a “Western European government” asked him to block Romanian conservatives ahead of the vote. Durov hinted at France with a baguette emoji and accused French intel chief Nicolas Lerner of personally approaching him.
