Big Ben light switched on to mark end of WWII blackouts
On Thursday evening, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle turned on the Ayrton Light above Big Ben to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War blackouts.
In peacetime, the lantern light always shone out after sunset in order to show that the House of Commons was at work.

The speaker of the House of Commons turned on Big Ben's symbolic light as part of the VE Day anniversary celebrations. Sir Lindsay Hoyle replicated former speaker Douglas Clifton Brown who switched on the light at the top of Big Ben in 1945, which symbolised the end of the blackouts in London during the Second World War. An explosion at Japan’s Kadena Air Base in Okinawa injured four Japanese Self-Defense Force (SDF) personnel during WWII ordnance disposal on Monday. The blast occurred inside the U.S.-controlled base, though no American personnel were hurt. The injuries are not life-threatening. Japan’s 15th Brigade was handling unexploded ammunition at the time. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area as investigations continue. Kadena, the largest U.S. airbase in the Asia-Pacific, plays a key strategic role near Taiwan.

Donald Trump stirred fresh controversy by insisting the United States was solely responsible for winning World War II. In a speech, he stated, “WE were the ones that won the war,” minimizing Allied contributions. He later added that “we were helped, and in some cases, we had to help THEM,” further intensifying backlash. Historians and critics have slammed the remarks as revisionist and disrespectful. Trump, however, remains defiant, framing the statement as a bold assertion of American strength in global history, especially during his campaign push.

Gaza, already devastated by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, now faces nuclear threats after Florida Congressman Randy Fine shockingly called for a Hiroshima-style strike during a Fox News appearance. Comparing Israel's war on Gaza to WWII, Fine declared, “We nuked the Japanese twice... that needs to be the same here.” Civil rights group CAIR condemned the statement as genocidal and demanded his removal from Congress, warning his rhetoric endangers Muslims and Palestinians globally and undermines U.S. diplomatic efforts for peace.
