Cooper outlines new border bill to crackdown on crossings
People selling and handling boat parts suspected of being used in migrant Channel crossings could face up to 14 years in prison under new laws trying to crack down on people smugglers.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has also outlined plans to make endangering another life during a sea crossing to the UK a new offence carrying a five-year jail term under the Border Security, Asylum and Immigration Bill introduced to Parliament on Thursday.

Yvette Cooper said she is "really worried about" increasing levels of extremism amongst young people in the country.
Asked about the issue in the Home Affairs Committee, the home secretary said: "I see it in the kinds of cases that I'm briefed on, just increasing numbers of teenagers - where there are serious concerns."

The shadow business minister has claimed the government has "lost control" as record numbers of migrants crossed the channel this weekend. More than 1,100 migrants arrived in the UK after crossing the English Channel on Saturday, the highest number recorded so far in 2025.
