Amid West Bengal campus unrest, Calcutta HC says don't want Bangladesh rerun
Wednesday, 5 March 2025 Indiscipline at Jadavpur University must not spread across Bengal campuses, warns Calcutta High Court. The court ordered the registration of an FIR based on a student's complaint after education minister Baratiya Basu faced violence at the university. The government is urged to act as a guardian for students.
Murshidabad in West Bengal witnessed violent clashes on April 14, 2025, resulting in three deaths linked to protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. West Bengal Police have arrested 150 people, and additional security forces have been deployed in affected areas like Samserganj, Dhuliyan, and Suti. BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato has written to Amit Shah, requesting the imposition of AFSPA in four districts. The Calcutta High Court has also ordered the immediate deployment of central forces in Murshidabad to restore peace.
