Calcutta HC orders fresh trial of 10 cases tied to Nandigram agitation
Wednesday, 12 February 2025 Calcutta high court has ordered a fresh trial for 10 criminal cases, including murders, lodged during the Left Front tenure. The court dismissed the state plea for withdrawal, emphasizing that allowing such withdrawal would not be in public interest and would cause public harm.
Murshidabad in West Bengal witnessed violent clashes on April 14, 2025, resulting in three deaths linked to protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. West Bengal Police have arrested 150 people, and additional security forces have been deployed in affected areas like Samserganj, Dhuliyan, and Suti. BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato has written to Amit Shah, requesting the imposition of AFSPA in four districts. The Calcutta High Court has also ordered the immediate deployment of central forces in Murshidabad to restore peace.
