Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp clashed with the criticsed Home Secretary Yvette Cooper in the House of Commons on Monday during a statement on the asylum crisis. Mr Philp said: "29,003 illegal immigrants crossed the English channel, that is the worst year in history. This government is failing and everyone can see it".

The government are set to announce tighter rules which will make it more difficult for refugees to bring family members into the country. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said the Conservatives fully back the government's new childcare scheme, calling it a "continuation of an existing Conservative policy". From Monday, eligible working parents in England will be able to access 30 hours a week of free childcare for children older than nine months under the full rollout of the scheme.
