Extreme weather is UK’s ‘new normal’, says Met Office
Extremes of heat and rainfall are becoming the new normal in the UK, says the Met Office.
Its State of the Climate report 2024 highlights how the UK is now about 1.24C warmer than from 1961 to 1990.
The report also confirms for the first time that sea level rise in the UK is higher than the global average, increasing risks of coastal flooding and erosion.

The UK has experienced its sunniest spring on record, with four days of the season still to go. Some 630 hours of sunshine were clocked up across the country between March 1 and May 27, according to provisional figures from the Met Office. Four people killed when a medical transport plane crashed at London Southend Airport have been confirmed as foreign nationals, Essex Police Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin said. Constance Marten and her partner Mark Gordon have been convicted of the gross negligence manslaughter of their newborn baby.
