In a landmark diplomatic moment, DR Congo and Rwanda signed a historic U.S.-brokered peace deal in Washington aimed at ending decades of deadly conflict. President Donald Trump called it a âglorious triumphâ while hosting the signing ceremony in the Oval Office, flanked by VP JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The agreement includes âdisengagement, disarmament and conditional integrationâ of armed groups and signals potential U.S. access to DR Congoâs rare earth minerals. Yet deep questions remainâespecially regarding the M23 rebels, Rwandan troop presence, and humanitarian access. With both countries denying support for rival militias, the full terms remain classified, fueling skepticism.
Trump, however, hailed it as a generational victory. Previous similar treaties have failed. But this deal, supported by earlier Qatari mediation, might offer a sliver of hope in a region long marred by instability and mineral-fueled warfare.
