The blast erupted during an LPG unloading operation at a local gas station, sending a massive orange fireball into the sky and hurling glass and metal debris across the area.
Rai News and Corriere della Sera confirm that emergency crews were already evacuating the site before the detonation, likely saving lives.
Nearby Metro stop Teano was shut down as authorities cordoned off the area and battled ongoing flames.
Eyewitnesses described the moment as “hellish,” with shockwaves felt far beyond the city’s eastern quarters.
The blast reignited safety concerns over urban fuel depots in populated residential zones.
An investigation into the exact cause is underway as Rome reels from one of the city’s most chaotic emergencies in recent years.
