Pope Leo XIV has offered the Vatican as a venue for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, following the failed negotiations in Istanbul where Putin was notably absent. The Vatican called Putin’s no-show “tragic” and reaffirmed its openness to mediation. Cardinal Parolin acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but stressed the Holy See’s readiness. In his first Sunday blessing, Pope Leo urged both leaders to “meet, talk, and negotiate,” emphasizing that peacemakers are the ones who truly “make history.” The Pope has pledged to prioritize peace throughout his papacy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed gratitude to Pope Leo XIV for offering to mediate global peace. In a heartfelt message on X, Zelensky called peace Ukraine’s “most sacred wish” and welcomed the Pope’s readiness to help end war. He reaffirmed Kyiv’s call for a full ceasefire and proposed a personal high-level meeting with Russia. The Pope had made his offer during an audience with Eastern Church pilgrims in Rome. In a major overnight assault on May 15–16, Russia launched 112 drones—including Shahed models—at Ukraine, striking multiple regions. Ukraine’s air defense systems shot down 73 UAVs, but the attack still caused damage across Odesa, Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, and Chernihiv. The drones were launched from Bryansk, Kursk, and Millerovo. Ukrainian aircraft, missile units, and electronic warfare systems responded to the coordinated drone swarm. While 36 decoy drones vanished from radar, the repeated strikes continue to threaten both civilian infrastructure and military targets across Ukraine.

President Trump said Friday that he's moving to set up direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin as soon as he can, after Putin opted to skip peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey. "I think it's time for us to just do it," Mr. Trump told reporters as he wrapped a four-day visit to the Middle East. Later, he told reporters on Air Force One, setting off on the journey back to Washington, that he might call Putin soon. "He and I will meet, and I think we'll solve it or maybe not," Mr. Trump said. "At least we'll know. And if we don't solve it, it'll be very interesting."
