Tories acknowledge ‘very competitive’ local elections
Kemi Badenoch, whose party currently holds around half the seats up for election on Thursday, acknowledges that the local elections present her with a challenge.
Visiting a farm in Lincolnshire, the Conservative leader says, “it is a very, very competitive political environment” and claims Reform UK are profiting through Labour doing so “badly”.

Sir James Cleverly has returned to the Conservative frontbench as Kemi Badenoch announced changes to her shadow cabinet. Addressing the reshuffle during a visit to a housing site, Ms Badenoch said Mr Cleverly is "a very experienced member of the parliamentary party" who agrees with her position on the ECHR. Thousands of resident doctors have launched a five-day strike across England after pay talks collapsed. There has been widespread disruption at UK airports after an air traffic control glitch. Aviation analytics company Cirium said 84 departures and 71 arrivals were cancelled up to 10pm on Wednesday. National Air Traffic Services (Nats) say the glitch was caused by a radar-related issue and that "there is no evidence that this was cyber related." The government are cracking down on late payments by cutting red tape for small businesses. Discussing the plans, Business Minister Gareth Thomas said: "We are determined to crack down on late payments. It costs £11bn to the UK economy every year.
