The infamous Sednaya Prison near Damascus became a site of emotional reunions and frantic searches as rebel forces stormed the facility, freeing all detainees.
Videos captured teary-eyed families rushing to the prison gates, anxiously flipping through records, and speaking to authorities in hopes of locating their long-detained relatives.
Scenes of overwhelming relief unfolded as freed detainees emerged from the prison, many breaking into tears as they embraced waiting loved ones.
For some, it marked the end of years of separation and anguish.
The footage also shows the tension and chaos of the moment, with crowds gathering in a mix of disbelief and joy.
Deadly violence erupted in Jaramana, a Druze and Christian-majority suburb near Damascus, after a leaked audio recording allegedly insulting Islamic religious figures triggered outrage. On April 28, reports say Islamist HTS forces stormed the area, leading to intense gunfire and shelling that lasted around 30 minutes. At least four Druze fighters were killed, with unverified reports suggesting dozens injured or over 20 dead. The incident highlights rising sectarian tensions under HTS rule in Syria, as the region remains on edge following similar clashes in March.
