Russia’s FSB chief, Aleksandr Bortnikov, has warned that US-backed strikes on Russian territory will likely escalate the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
He accused the West of destabilizing the region, specifically Ukraine, and fostering a dangerous global shadow weapons market.
With rising concerns over terrorism and foreign intelligence influence, Bortnikov stressed that such actions could have far-reaching consequences, heightening security risks globally.
Tensions escalated near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed hearing explosions and spotting rising smoke from a nearby auxiliary facility under reported shelling and drone attack. The plant, Europe’s largest and among the top 10 globally, has been under Russian control since March 2022. The blasts began around 9 a.m. and continued through the afternoon, just 1,200 meters from the main plant.
IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi warned that any military activity near nuclear facilities poses a severe threat to global nuclear safety. Meanwhile, new Greenpeace satellite imagery reveals Russia’s attempt to integrate the Zaporizhzhia plant into its energy grid, laying over 80 km of high-voltage power lines from occupied Mariupol and Berdyansk. This incident adds to growing concerns over the militarization and misuse of critical nuclear infrastructure in the ongoing Ukraine war.
