Mick Whelan: Aslef members are pleased with this deal
Mick Whelan, general secretary of Aslef, has said his members are “pleased” with a new pay deal that will see the end of more than two years of strike action.
Aslef union members accepted an offer which included a 5% backdated pay rise for 2022-23, a 4.75% rise for 23-24, and a 4.5% increase for 24-25.

Reform UK’s Deputy Leader Richard Tice said it was a “remarkable” result for his party after they came third behind SNP and Scottish Labour who won the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-elections in a shock result. Tice also said he was “sad” to see party chair, Zia Yusuf, leave.

Scottish Labour Leader Anas Sarwar has hailed his party’s shock victory in the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-elections, saying the results sent a “clear message” from the Scottish people, who he says are “sick of the SNP” and “reject the poison of Farage”. Scottish Labour stunned the SNP to win the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election by just 602 votes, whilst Reform UK beat the Conservatives into third place, just 800 votes shy of the SNP in second. The government has hailed Scottish Labour’s victory in the by-election in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse whilst piling criticism on Reform Leader Nigel Farage following the resignation of party chair, Zia Yusuf. The government has announced new regulations that mean six water companies will be banned from paying bonuses to senior bosses. Environment Secretary Steve Reed also spoke about criminal investigations into water companies and private investment into sewage treatment.
