Russia's central bank hikes rates to fight inflation fuelled by military spending
Russia's central bank raised its interest rate by a full percentage point on Friday as government military spending in its invasion of Ukraine strains the economy.
In a stunning political shift, nearly 90% of Ukrainians say they don’t trust U.S. President Donald Trump, according to a new poll marking his first 100 days back in office. Once seen as a possible dealmaker in the Russia-Ukraine war, Trump is now viewed with deep skepticism in Kyiv after refusing to provide security guarantees, blaming Ukrainian leadership for the ongoing conflict, and proposing a controversial peace plan that many see as favoring Moscow. US President Donald Trump has claimed Ukraine could be “crushed very shortly” unless it agrees to peace talks with Russia. In an interview with The Atlantic, Trump said he’s trying to save Ukraine by pushing for negotiations, suggesting Moscow is open to a deal. He criticized Kiev’s stance, especially on Crimea, and hinted Zelensky was tougher to negotiate with than Putin. Meanwhile, Vice President Vance echoed similar concerns, and Secretary of State Rubio warned of the US abandoning talks if delays persist. Trump is also seeking a minerals agreement with Ukraine.
