A recent earthquake in central Syria has stirred distressing memories of last year's devastating tremor, although it has had only a minor impact this time around.
Measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale and striking 28 kilometers east of Hama, the quake was also felt in Damascus and Beirut, prompting residents to take to the streets in fear of aftershocks.
The US Geological Survey has confirmed the quake’s magnitude as 5.0 with a depth of 10 kilometers.
Fortunately, local authorities have reported no deaths or significant damage following the event, providing some relief amidst ongoing regional anxieties.
Violence broke out in the southern Damascus suburb of Jaramana after a controversial audio clip allegedly insulting Prophet Muhammad went viral. The clip, falsely attributed to Druze cleric Marwan Kiwan, triggered deadly clashes between Druze gunmen and government forces. Kiwan denied the message, and Syria’s Interior Ministry confirmed he wasn’t responsible. At least 10 people were killed, with activist groups reporting higher tolls. As religious leaders call for calm and Israel monitors the situation, tensions remain high in one of Syria's most volatile suburbs.
