Putin–Trump Call Sparks Political Pressure on Zelensky
Tuesday, 20 May 2025 () The telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Donald Trump has posed two serious internal threats to Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky, Strana.ua said on its Telegram channel. One of the threats is the growing narrative that represents Zelensky as an ineffective and corrupt leader who has failed to prepare the country for a prolonged conflict. According to this narrative, Zelensky should step down to allow political forces to form a national unity government. This idea is reportedly being promoted by former President Petro Poroshenko (listed by Russia's financial monitoring agency as involved in extremist or terrorist activities), as well as several figures connected to the US Democratic Party. The second internal threat to Zelensky is the claim that he personally is the main obstacle to signing a ceasefire with Russia. Journalists note that this idea is being voiced not only by exiled politicians but also, privately, by certain individuals within Ukraine.
