Ukrainians mourn their war dead after almost 1,000 days of war - but US move sparks hope
Monday, 18 November 2024 Barely anyone speaks – there is virtual silence apart from the sounds of passing vehicles and the wind whipping through flags and photographs commemorating the dead in a war that started 1,000 days ago when Russia invaded.
Russian opposition figures organised a protest march leading to the Russian embassy in Berlin to mark 1,000 days of war in Ukraine, an event which leaves some Ukrainians with mixed feelings.
Sir Keir Starmer says talks on a potential ceasefire in Ukraine are "not at the end of the process" and any ceasefire has “got to be lasting, because I don’t trust Putin”. Asked about the suggestion the US could recognise Russia's annexation of Crimea; the prime minister tells broadcasters: "Ultimately that is a matter for the Ukrainians”. Report by Blairm. Sir Keir Starmer says the overnight strike on Kyiv demonstrates that Russia President Vladimir Putin was "the aggressor here”. At least nine people were killed and more than 70 injured after a Russian strike on the Ukrainian capital amid further difficulties in peace talks. Speaking on a visit to Bristol, the prime minister says: "I think it's a real reminder that Russia is the aggressor here and that is being felt by the Ukrainians, as it has been felt for three long years now”. Sir Keir Starmer said it was “incredibly humbling” to see allied nations training Ukrainian troops, praising the “resilience” of the soldiers during a visit to a UK military base with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid tribute to Pope Francis following his death at age 88, calling him a spiritual figure who “knew how to give hope, ease suffering, and foster unity.”
The pope had repeatedly condemned the war in Ukraine, praying for peace and denouncing violence. Zelenskyy’s message reflects the deep spiritual connection many Ukrainians felt toward Francis during the ongoing invasion.
This story looks at how Pope Francis became a symbol of resilience and comfort in times of war.

Russia-Ukraine Ceasefire: Russia’s sudden announcement of a 30-hour Easter ceasefire has been met with outrage and deep suspicion in Ukraine. Citizens across Kyiv and other cities have rejected the so-called truce, calling it a deceptive move by the Kremlin to regroup and reload. Many Ukrainians label the ceasefire a propaganda stunt, insisting that “terrorists cannot be trusted” and warning that such pauses often precede intensified attacks. As missiles continue to fall in some regions, trust in Moscow’s intentions is nonexistent, and fears of a post-ceasefire assault loom large.
