How batik sarees helped Tamil Nadu’s Cholamandal village become India’s largest art commune

Akkitham Narayanan, an 86-year-old artist and founding member of Cholamandal Artists' Village, reflects on the early days of the commune and his transition from figurative to abstract geometric art. His retrospective, hosted at Lalit Kala Akademi, showcases six decades of work. Inspired by math and his poet brother, Narayanan's paintings feature triangles and squares with vibrant, primary colors.
