Court holds 3 guilty in '16 Kollam collectorate blast case, acquits one

The Kerala state government has declared a statewide emergency after the Liberian-flagged cargo ship MSC ELSA 3 sank off its coast on Sunday. The ship was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous cargo like calcium carbide, which releases flammable acetylene gas. The incident has triggered fears of a major ecological disaster. Authorities have issued alerts for potential oil spills and toxic container drift, especially in southern Kollam and Alappuzha. The Indian Coast Guard has deployed two vessels and a Dornier aircraft to contain the spill, as over 450 metric tonnes of oil and diesel are feared to have leaked into the Arabian Sea. While all 24 crew members were rescued, residents and fishermen are urged to stay away from affected areas as coastal contamination looms.
