Born in Chennai, Yechury served as CPI(M) General Secretary since 2015 and was known for his activism during the Emergency and tenure in Rajya Sabha.

The Minister confirmed that the flight, carrying 242 passengers, issued a mayday signal moments after takeoff before losing contact with air traffic control. The aircraft, which had flown from Paris to Delhi and onward to Ahmedabad, crashed just 2 km from the airport in Medhani Nagar. A high-level independent probe has been launched, with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) examining the technical causes.
