US prosecutors directed to seek death penalty for Luigi Mangione - man accused of killing healthcare boss
Tuesday, 1 April 2025 Prosecutors are being urged to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of fatally shooting the chief executive of a major company in New York in December.
Federal prosecutors will pursue the death penalty if Luigi Mangione is convicted of Murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Mangione is accused of killing the executive to send a political message and ignite widespread opposition to the healthcare industry. The DOJ has filed a formal “notice of intent to seek the death penalty,” backed by Attorney General Pam Bondi. Prosecutors say Mangione deliberately targeted a high-profile victim to maximize impact. His defense calls the government’s move “barbaric” and politically motivated. Mangione will plead not guilty to a four-count indictment, including firearm-related Murder.
